"Full-Circle"
Community Composting Program

We at Desert Roots Farm are constantly working to build our farm soil and keep it as
healthy as possible. The quality of our soil plays a HUGE role in assuring the
production of high-quality, tasty vegetables. By far, the largest loss of nutrients
and organic matter to our soil comes as a result of harvesting those delicious vegetables
for our wonderful CSA members. However, we wouldn’t be much of a farm if we didn’t share
our vegetables with our CSA families, right?!
So, in an effort to get some of those lost nutrients and organic matter back to our farm,
we’ve launched the Desert Roots Farm “Full-Circle” Community Composting Program. Each of our
CSA members receives a “Biobag” biodegradable compost bag. Our members keep the bag
in their kitchen and use it to discard raw fruit and vegetable scraps. When the bag is full,
they just seal it up and leave it outside their front door on their vegetable delivery day.
We pick up the “Biobag” bag (leaving a new bag behind) and add the entire bag to our
farm’s compost pile. The bag, as well as the fruit and vegetable scraps inside, completely
biodegrade and do wonders for the health of our compost pile and our farm soil.
What Can I Put In the “Biobag” Bags”?
PLEASE, put only raw fruit and vegetable scraps in the “Biobag” bags.
These scraps can come either from Desert Roots Farm veggies or certified organic
veggies purchased at the grocery store. This includes such scraps as
carrot tops, carrot skin peelings, beet tops, onion skins, lettuce leaves, banana
peels, apple cores, etc..
ABSOLUTELY DO NOT put egg shells, meat, bones, cheese, dairy or any food scraps
other than raw, Desert Roots Farm or certified organic fruits and vegetables
in the "Biobag" bags. These items will not only unfavorably effect the
balance and organic status of our compost pile, but may entice neighborhood dogs,
cats, rats and other uninvited guests to visit our farm. If you’re not sure about
whether it should go in the “Biobag”, please just throw it away.
